C&rsquo;est le rythme auquel le Grand collisionneur de hadrons g\u00e9n\u00e8re des donn\u00e9es que nul syst\u00e8me informatique terrestre ne pourrait int\u00e9gralement absorber.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Dans les entrailles du CERN, \u00e0 cheval sur la fronti\u00e8re franco-suisse, cette r\u00e9alit\u00e9 physique impose une contrainte radicale : il faut choisir. Chaque fraction de seconde, des algorithmes d&rsquo;intelligence artificielle d\u00e9cident, \u00e0 la place des physiciens, quelles collisions m\u00e9ritent d&rsquo;\u00eatre conserv\u00e9es et lesquelles disparaissent \u00e0 jamais. Ce tri automatis\u00e9, op\u00e9r\u00e9 en quelques nanosecondes, n&rsquo;est plus une curiosit\u00e9 technique \u2014 c&rsquo;est le c\u0153ur battant de la recherche en physique des particules. Et selon les scientifiques du laboratoire, ce n&rsquo;est qu&rsquo;un d\u00e9but.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;histoire de cette relation entre l&rsquo;IA et le CERN remonte \u00e0 1987, lorsque les \u00e9quipes du laboratoire d\u00e9ploy\u00e8rent un premier syst\u00e8me capable de d\u00e9tecter les d\u00e9faillances du Synchrotron \u00e0 protons. Une application modeste, presque artisanale, compar\u00e9e \u00e0 ce qui allait suivre. C&rsquo;est lors de la d\u00e9couverte du boson de Higgs, en 2012, que la puissance de ces outils s&rsquo;est r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9e au monde scientifique. <strong>Maurizio Pierini<\/strong>, physicien au CERN, d\u00e9crit les algorithmes d&rsquo;apprentissage automatique de l&rsquo;\u00e9poque comme \u00abl&rsquo;arri\u00e8re-grand-p\u00e8re de ce que l&rsquo;on appelle aujourd&rsquo;hui l&rsquo;IA\u00bb. Ces pr\u00e9curseurs ont permis de filtrer mille signaux par seconde dans un flux de donn\u00e9es d&rsquo;une densit\u00e9 vertigineuse, isolant la signature fugace d&rsquo;une particule qui n&rsquo;existe qu&rsquo;un instant infinit\u00e9simal avant de se d\u00e9sint\u00e9grer. Sans eux, la \u00abparticule de Dieu\u00bb serait rest\u00e9e introuvable.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Ce succ\u00e8s a ouvert une question plus ambitieuse : que se passe-t-il lorsque les scientifiques ne savent pas encore ce qu&rsquo;ils cherchent ? Pierini a orient\u00e9 ses travaux vers ce que l&rsquo;on appelle la <strong>d\u00e9tection d&rsquo;anomalies<\/strong> \u2014 une approche qui rappelle, dans sa logique, les syst\u00e8mes antifraude des \u00e9tablissements bancaires. Plut\u00f4t que de rechercher une signature th\u00e9orique pr\u00e9d\u00e9finie, l&rsquo;algorithme apprend \u00e0 reconna\u00eetre le comportement ordinaire des donn\u00e9es et signale tout ce qui s&rsquo;en \u00e9carte. Appliqu\u00e9e aux flux du LHC, cette m\u00e9thode pourrait r\u00e9v\u00e9ler des ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes que la physique th\u00e9orique n&rsquo;a pas encore anticip\u00e9s. \u00abC&rsquo;est un moyen de d\u00e9couvrir l&rsquo;inattendu\u00bb, r\u00e9sume Pierini, avec une conviction qui tranche sur la prudence habituelle du milieu scientifique.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>La port\u00e9e de cette ambition d\u00e9passe la seule collecte de donn\u00e9es. \u00c0 mesure que les algorithmes gagnent en pr\u00e9cision, leur capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 analyser les r\u00e9sultats apr\u00e8s exp\u00e9rience s&rsquo;accro\u00eet dans des proportions consid\u00e9rables. Pierini \u00e9voque, dans certains cas, un gain de pr\u00e9cision d&rsquo;un facteur plusieurs centaines, assorti d&rsquo;\u00e9conomies potentielles de plusieurs millions de francs. Dans un contexte o\u00f9 le CERN n\u00e9gocie le financement de son futur <strong>Future Circular Collider (FCC)<\/strong> \u2014 un projet estim\u00e9 \u00e0 quelque quinze milliards de francs, destin\u00e9 \u00e0 remplacer le LHC dans les ann\u00e9es 2040 \u2014 cet argument budg\u00e9taire n&rsquo;est pas anodin. La Conf\u00e9d\u00e9ration, qui accueille le si\u00e8ge du laboratoire sur son territoire et contribue \u00e0 son financement, suit de pr\u00e8s l&rsquo;\u00e9quation co\u00fbt-b\u00e9n\u00e9fice de ces investissements colossaux.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;ancienne directrice g\u00e9n\u00e9rale du CERN, <strong>Fabiola Gianotti<\/strong>, le dit sans d\u00e9tour : \u00abNous allons recourir de plus en plus \u00e0 l&rsquo;IA.\u00bb Ce recours s&rsquo;\u00e9tend d\u00e9sormais \u00e0 toutes les phases du cycle exp\u00e9rimental \u2014 conception, collecte, analyse \u2014 et s&rsquo;appr\u00eate \u00e0 franchir une nouvelle fronti\u00e8re : celle de l&rsquo;ing\u00e9nierie. <strong>Maria Spiropulu<\/strong>, physicienne au California Institute of Technology et collaboratrice du CERN, anticipe un r\u00f4le de l&rsquo;IA \u00ab\u00e0 toutes les \u00e9tapes, de la conception des d\u00e9tecteurs \u00e0 la conduite des exp\u00e9riences, en passant par les syst\u00e8mes de surveillance\u00bb. Les outils d&rsquo;optimisation pourraient notamment acc\u00e9l\u00e9rer la mise au point de nouveaux mat\u00e9riaux pour les aimants supraconducteurs, composants dont le co\u00fbt p\u00e8se lourdement dans le budget de tout grand collisionneur.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Reste une limite que les physiciens eux-m\u00eames se chargent de rappeler avec clart\u00e9. \u00abL&rsquo;IA ne nous permettra pas de r\u00e9aliser les exp\u00e9riences du FCC sans le FCC lui-m\u00eame\u00bb, souligne Pierini. L&rsquo;intelligence artificielle optimise, filtre, con\u00e7oit \u2014 elle ne produit pas les collisions. La machine reste irrempla\u00e7able, et c&rsquo;est pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment autour d&rsquo;elle que se jouent les n\u00e9gociations politiques et financi\u00e8res les plus d\u00e9licates entre les \u00c9tats membres du CERN.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Au-del\u00e0 des instruments et des budgets, c&rsquo;est la sociologie m\u00eame de la discipline qui pourrait se transformer. La physique des particules traverse une p\u00e9riode de recrutement difficile ; le nombre de chercheurs diminue, et la concurrence d&rsquo;autres domaines scientifiques \u2014 notamment l&rsquo;informatique quantique et la biologie computationnelle \u2014 s&rsquo;intensifie. L&rsquo;IA, en d\u00e9chargeant les physiciens des t\u00e2ches les plus r\u00e9p\u00e9titives, pourrait redonner \u00e0 la discipline un attrait intellectuel que certains lui trouvent en d\u00e9clin. Elle ferait \u00e9galement \u00e9merger des profils hybrides, \u00e0 la crois\u00e9e de la physique fondamentale et de l&rsquo;ing\u00e9nierie algorithmique, dont le CERN a pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment besoin pour mener \u00e0 bien ses prochaines g\u00e9n\u00e9rations d&rsquo;exp\u00e9riences.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Dans les couloirs du laboratoire genevois, Maurizio Pierini formule l&rsquo;enjeu avec une image qui dit tout : \u00abL&rsquo;IA peut am\u00e9liorer nos recherches \u00ab\u00a0sous le r\u00e9verb\u00e8re\u00a0\u00bb, mais ce qui m&rsquo;int\u00e9resse davantage, c&rsquo;est un algorithme capable de regarder derri\u00e8re mon dos.\u00bb Cette phrase, dans sa simplicit\u00e9, r\u00e9sume une r\u00e9volution m\u00e9thodologique en cours. Pendant des d\u00e9cennies, la physique des particules a cherch\u00e9 \u00e0 confirmer ou infirmer des th\u00e9ories d\u00e9j\u00e0 formul\u00e9es. L&rsquo;IA ouvre la possibilit\u00e9 inverse : observer d&rsquo;abord, s&rsquo;interroger ensuite, th\u00e9oriser apr\u00e8s. Ce retour \u00e0 l&#8217;empirisme pur, arm\u00e9 d&rsquo;une puissance de calcul sans pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent, pourrait bien \u00eatre le moteur des prochaines grandes d\u00e9couvertes \u2014 \u00e0 condition que le FCC voie le jour, et que les \u00c9tats membres trouvent un accord sur son financement.
